SERIES: GROUNDHOG DAY
Philippians 2:5-11 Mike Rowe entertained us for eight seasons as the host of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs. In Dirty Jobs, Mike performs, alongside the employees, strange, disgusting, and very stinky occupations. Truth be told, most jobs – blue collar, white collar, any-color collar, involves cleaning up some else’s mess. In Philippians, 2:5ff Paul poetically pictures the exalted Christ coming to us to clean up our mess. With this model of service, Paul tells us what we need is an ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT to follow the same pathway to exalted living.
Luke 22:24 A dispute also arose among the disciples as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 27 Jesus said to them, who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? I am among you as one who serves.
Philippians 2: 5 Have this ATTITUDE in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
I. Let Go of Your Sense of Self Importance
6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be GRASPED,
II. Pour Yourself Into Service
7 but EMPTIED Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
III. Be Willing To Do The Dirty Work
8 Being found in appearance as a man, He HUMBLED Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
IV. Let God Do the Exalting
9 For this reason also, God highly EXALTED Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Luke 14: 11 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
